We come now to the ‘ol best billiard balls. As with many sports, these are the vital link in the chain. If you don’t have these, good luck in playing a game! You also want a quality set because yes , it matters. You wouldn’t play basketball with a volleyball!
In the early days ivory was used for the best billiard balls. Sadly, many elephants were killed for the sport, until the billiard industries realized they had become endangered and started searching for new material.
Today, thankfully, the most often used material is a phenolic resin which is very resistant to chipping and cracking. Some other materials such as a polyester resin may be used as well.
There are a lot of different styles you can buy. I like the more old school balls like the picture on the left, which is the official color and number set. You can get just about any color you would want too.
I just happen to like the look and it’s what I’ve been using for years. Some of my friends use the marble looking one’s which are pretty cool as well.

There is no wrong one, as long as you are comfortable with them. The normal, regulation size ball is 2 1/4 ” in diameter and weighs between 5 1/2 to 6 oz. My wife is a huge Penn State fan so naturally she likes the Penn State set. A very nice conversation starter as well, especially if you like a rival school or team!
I’ve played with a clear set once and that was different. It was new, fun and the owner certainly seemed to like them a lot. You can get them personalized if you want as well. It would be harder to lose them if you have multiple sets, which is a plus!

The best billiard balls are easy to clean, just use a microfiber cloth found in most department stores. Keep them free of grease or wax of any kind as that will cause the ball to move differently.

If you play a ton, watch for slight cracking as you play. The weight may vary slightly but unless you play competitively, you will not notice any difference. Each of these best billiard balls is right at 6 ounces give or take.

Aramith Pool Table Ball Review
This next best pool table ball set we will be checking out is the Aramith Premium Set.
Now, this is a legit call-your-friend-over type of set! Whenever I’ve played with any Aramith ball, I know immediately the difference between sets. It’s truly like night and day.
